Eurozone Inflation Surpasses ECB Target
Several leading economies in the region experienced significant inflationary shifts. Germany’s rate climbed to 2.8 percent from 2.0 percent, France’s rose to 1.9 percent from 1.1 percent, and Spain’s surged to 3.3 percent from 2.5 percent. Energy costs, in particular, saw a dramatic rise, jumping to 4.9 percent from a previous decline of -3.1 percent, as stated by statistical data.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, now entering its fifth week with no resolution in sight, has reversed the previous decline in energy prices, driving them sharply higher across Europe.
In Germany, energy prices increased by 7.2 percent compared with the same period last year, marking the first increase since December 2023, according to federal data released recently.
Similarly, in France, energy costs are expected to rise by 7.3 percent year-on-year in March, following a 2.9 percent drop in February, as projected by national statistics authorities.
Portugal also recorded an uptick in energy prices, which rose by 5.8 percent in March after a 2.2 percent decline in February. This surge has led many Portuguese drivers to travel to Spain in search of cheaper fuel, as reported.
